Enter into a haunting world filled with magic, a deadly beast, and a determined huntress. Meagan Spooner's retelling of the tale as old as time will leave you with a poignant feeling and a want to know more. It will take you on a eerie journey as Beauty hunts down her Beast...
This is a book I've been intending to read for a while now. (It was on my TBR for the year) I haven't been reading much lately simply because of the lack of time, but when Hunted came in the mail, I decided I simply had to start it in celebration of the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast coming out. (Yeah.... I read this book and started this review before the movie came out...)
The eerie tone of the book was especially enjoyable. There was just so much mystery, despite the fact you know the story and could probably guess how it ends, there are still a ton of story elements that you're going to question and try to figure out why?
While I enjoyed Yeva's character, she was strong and able to stand up for herself, I felt iffy about the Beast in this book. I dunno, there just wasn't much to grow attached to for me.
I was pleasantly surprised by the "Gaston" character as well as the sisters. Usually the sisters are ignorant, dislikable characters, but instead these sisters are caring and sweet and you really can't help but want the best for them. Same with the "Gaston" character. He was very surprisingly good.
I don't really have much to say about this book, aside from the fact I read it a long time ago, there just aren't that many elements that really stand out that I feel the need to mention. Not to say that the book was bad, because it wasn't. I really enjoyed reading it, but it just didn't stand out amidst the large pile of other fantasy-like books I've read. I do still recommend the book though, it's a fun read. Especially for those of you who like fairytale retellings. It's not one that will leave you disappointed, like some other retellings (I'm looking at you, Shadow Queen.) I'd give this book a solid 6.8/10 stars. It's not quite outstanding enough to make it to my favorites list, but I still really enjoyed it, and think other people would as well.
Synopsis:

Beauty knows the Beast’s forest in her bones—and in her blood. Though she grew up with the city’s highest aristocrats, far from her father’s old lodge, she knows that the forest holds secrets and that her father is the only hunter who’s ever come close to discovering them.

So when her father loses his fortune and moves Yeva and her sisters back to the outskirts of town, Yeva is secretly relieved. Out in the wilderness, there’s no pressure to make idle chatter with vapid baronessas…or to submit to marrying a wealthy gentleman. But Yeva’s father’s misfortune may have cost him his mind, and when he goes missing in the woods, Yeva sets her sights on one prey: the creature he’d been obsessively tracking just before his disappearance.

Deaf to her sisters’ protests, Yeva hunts this strange Beast back into his own territory—a cursed valley, a ruined castle, and a world of creatures that Yeva’s only heard about in fairy tales. A world that can bring her ruin or salvation. Who will survive: the Beauty, or the Beast?
